At its roots, Casa Papel is a love story. Owners Cecilia and Nestor Torres are a married couple with a passion for paper. While researching options for their own wedding in 2005, Cecilia was dissatisfied with the offerings and knew she could create something better. After the couple moved from Portland to Pittsburgh and finally settled in Philadelphia, they decided it was time to take the plunge and open a store. They opened their studio in Northern Liberties and have grown year after year. 

“From unique enclosures and invitations to business cards and presentation kits, the right paper stands out,” says Nestor. While Cecilia handles the design, Nestor handles most of the business. “We source papers from all over the world including Italy, Germany, England, Japan, even Nepal,” he says. While some may dismiss paper as traditional, Nestor disagrees. “People are looking for ways to differentiate themselves and their businesses. Even just a simple handwritten thank-you note makes a big impact. We are discovering that customers are looking to use less of the cheaper products and looking for opportunities to drive growth and stand out. We are here to complement the digital age.” 

Red Cow might be best known for burgers, but you’d be remiss to ignore the cocktail menu. Crafted by Beverage Director Ian Lowther, drinks range from beer cocktails (called boilermakers) to shaken or stirred specialties. Lowther created the following boozy concoction just for Minnesota Meetings + Events magazine. 

INGREDIENTS:
—1 t. simple syrup
—1/3 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
—1/3 oz. fresh lemon juice
—1/3 oz. Tattersall Grapefruit Crema
—1/3 oz. St. George Pear Brandy
—1 2/3 oz. Lunazul Reposado Tequila

 

This is the kind of cocktail you don’t want to attempt to reproduce at home. To create that rosemary mint foam you will need both a nitrous-oxide whipper and an eyedropper (to dispense precisely two drops of rosemary essential oil). It’s the type of complex specialty drink you can find only at specialty bars, in this case the newcomer Mezcal Bar, which is tucked behind a curtain at the West Hollywood restaurant Laurel Hardware, and features nearly 100 different Mezcals sourced from more than 50 distillers.

DETAILS

This summer table fit for a special event, such as a chairman’s dinner, features a mix of midcentury design with modern elements. Carolyn Rizzo, head designer of Garnish, says this technique is easily accomplished in décor but challenging to pull off in event design.
